Kenya has set an ambitious target to attract 200,000 adventure travelers over the next five years with the launch of the Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series. Recently unveiled by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) in partnership with Athletics Kenya (AK), this initiative is part of a broader strategy to diversify the country’s tourism offerings and tap into the rapidly growing global adventure tourism market, valued at approximately $804 billion in 2024. The series combines Kenya’s renowned athletics legacy with its untapped adventure tourism potential, offering both international visitors and local enthusiasts opportunities to explore the country’s breathtaking landscapes. Additionally, the events will serve as training grounds for Kenyan athletes preparing for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.

Speaking during the flagging-off of the inaugural event—a five-day hiking expedition in Nyahururu, Laikipia County, culminating in the Barngetuny Mountain Run scheduled for January 18, 2025, in Nandi County—Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano expressed her enthusiasm for the series. She described it as an exceptional opportunity to showcase Kenya’s hidden gems and promote sustainable tourism. “This initiative bridges modern life with Kenya’s cultural roots, offering visitors a chance to connect with people and places meaningfully. It also underscores our commitment to preserving cultural heritage and creating new avenues for economic development,” she remarked.

The Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series will unfold throughout the year with a rich calendar of events designed to captivate adventure enthusiasts. Starting with the Nyamira Great Run in May, the series will feature the Mt. Kenya Mountain Run in June, Aberdare’s Trail Run in August, the Mt. Longonot Edition in November, and the Mt. Elgon Run in December. Each event is crafted to highlight the unique terrains, culture, and charm of Kenya’s diverse landscapes.

Athletics Kenya President, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei, emphasized the importance of this initiative in positioning Kenya as a global sports tourism destination. “The Heritage Trails Expedition and Barngetuny Run not only promote an active lifestyle but also showcase Kenya’s natural beauty and rich culture,” he stated.

KTB CEO June Chepkemei highlighted the collaboration with Athletics Kenya as a significant step in enhancing Kenya’s reputation as a top destination for adventure and sports tourism. She noted that the series forms part of the broader Kenya Adventure Tourism Club initiative, launched in July 2023. This initiative unites stakeholders from across Kenya’s tourism circuits to foster collaboration and elevate the country’s appeal to adventure enthusiasts worldwide.

The Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series offers an exciting year-round opportunity for travelers to immerse themselves in Kenya’s iconic landscapes, diverse cultural heritage, and world-class athletics tradition. As the series gains momentum, Kenya solidifies its position as a premier global destination for adventure and sports tourism, creating meaningful economic opportunities and cultural connections along the way.
