Diani, Kenya... Red Bull Quicksand, touted as the toughest mile race (1.6 kilometres) in the world, will be held for the first time in Kenya on the award-winning beach of Diani, Kwale County. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts will be able to test their mettle against 250 other competitors in this innovative and gruelling race. But how hard can one mile be? Three years after its thrilling inception in the seaside town of Margate in the UK, the race comes to Kenya joining five other countries in the series this year including Japan, South Africa, Egypt, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. One obvious challenge that comes with running on sand is that runners expend 1.6 times more energy on sand than running on a road surface.

This is in addition to the obstacle course that includes sandy climbs, and trenches giving competitors a full test of endurance, and speed. The man-made ‘sandcastle’ obstacles will tower over the competitors, forcing them to climb vertically over the loose terrain, creating a challenge to even the most hardened of athletes. With starving lungs and burning calves, competitors who advance will face the course all over again. The event follows a knockout format with runners progressing through heats and semi-finals to reach the grand finale, in what could be the most challenging mile you ever run.
