The African Tourism Board (ATB), led by Executive Chairman Cuthbert Ncube, has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia to enhance cooperation and sustainable development. This milestone was achieved during the ATB delegation's attendance at the Russia-Africa Tourism and Business Forum in Moscow last week.
At a high-level ministerial roundtable, leaders and delegates from both continents discussed “Fostering Russian-African Tourism and Business Collaboration for Socioeconomic Development.” The focus was on joint projects, best practices, and strengthening people-to-people diplomacy.
On June 12th, Roscongress Foundation CEO Alexander Stuglev and ATB’s Dr. Cuthbert Ncube formalized the strategic partnership by signing the MoU at the Let’s Travel! Russian Tourism Forum. Stuglev highlighted Africa's rapid infrastructure development and increasing accessibility, emphasizing the growing potential for tourism ties between Russia and Africa. “The memorandum of understanding that our organizations signed aims to tap into this potential,” he said.
The MoU outlines cooperation in promoting sustainable tourism and investment opportunities, enhancing the visibility and appeal of Africa and Russia as leading global destinations, and facilitating the exchange of resources and expertise in areas of mutual interest such as marketing strategies, investment promotion, and industrial development.
The collaboration also aims to attract international tourism organizations, ministers of tourism, and leading travel companies to both Africa and Russia. Recent statistics show a 30% increase in Russian tourists to Africa in 2023, with South Africa being the top destination. Other popular countries include Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, and Madagascar. Tours often combine several countries, averaging 10 days, allowing tourists to experience safaris and national parks.
Ncube remarked, “This MoU marks a significant milestone in our quest to unite Africa and Russia through tourism and investment. We are excited about the potential of this partnership to drive economic growth, create jobs, and facilitate cultural exchange.”
The ATB and its Russian counterparts will establish a joint committee to ensure the effective implementation of the MoU’s objectives, ensuring tangible benefits for both regions. The ATB, headquartered in Eswatini, aims to promote Africa as a premier tourism destination globally. The Roscongress Foundation, established by the President of the Russian Federation, is a major organizer of national and international conventions, exhibitions, and cultural events.
