Kenya has introduced two groundbreaking travel
authorizations – the Digital Nomad Work Permit and the Transit &
Long Connection Travellers Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
Announced by President William Ruto at the 14th Magical Kenya Travel
Expo (MKTE), these initiatives aim to make Kenya a hub for remote
workers and long-haul travelers by offering seamless access to its rich
tourism experiences. The programs align with the government's visa-free
policy and are expected to boost tourism, job creation, and economic
growth.
During the event, President Ruto emphasized that the Digital Nomad Work Permit will attract global digital professionals, allowing them to live and work in Kenya while exploring its natural beauty. The Transit ETA will encourage travellers on long layovers to immerse themselves in Kenya’s tourism instead of waiting at airports. Ruto also highlighted the importance of tourism as a key economic pillar, targeting 5 million visitors annually by 2027. He praised the MKTE for fostering partnerships across the tourism sector, from hoteliers to policymakers, and underscored Kenya’s commitment to enhancing tourist infrastructure and promoting cultural tourism.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano reinforced the President's message, stressing the importance of stakeholder collaboration to position Kenya as a top global destination. Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) CEO June Chepkemei added that MKTE 2024 would focus on promoting Kenya as a prime hub for business events and conferences, further expanding the country’s tourism portfolio beyond leisure travel.
